Fatal distractions.  These six things will put a huge roadblock in your journey to success.

First of all let’s define distractions.  A distraction is anything that that which distracts, divides the attention, or prevents concentration.  They come in many ‘not so known’ forms.  You MUST learn to eliminate distractions if you are going to be successful in anything that you do.

What kind of distractions are there?

1. People - People will always distract you from your dreams.  Does this mean you should eliminate EVERYONE from your life? No!  It simply means to be sure you are hanging around like-minded people (people who want to be successful)  These people are very knowledgeable and understand the importance of time.

2. Cell Phone - If I could count the many times I had such a great idea and was distracted by the cell phone, well honestly, I don’t think I could count that high.  Cell phones are great for communicating with your friends, family, etc..but throughout the day, do NOT let the cell phone control you.  Remember, YOU own it.  Choose when to answer.  If it is urgent, the person will leave a voice mail and you can check it when your work is done.  Most “urgent” situations can usually be answered at a later time.

3. Email - Email is the number ONE distraction on the face of the planet (especially if you use Outlook express or some other email client). There is NO way you can FOCUS on one task if you are constantly reading your emails throughout the day.  Tip.  Do not allow your email client inform you EVERY single time you receive an email.  Choose times to check it throughout the day.  My recommendation for this is once a day, right before lunch.  Again, if the situation is that important, the person can simply call you.  Tell everyone who you come into contact with that you only check your emails once a day

4. Meetings – How many times have you gone to a meeting and realized about halfway through that there is ABSOLUTELY no point in you attending the meeting?  Meetings usually are a bunch of BS about stuff that you should do .  If you do have meetings, (which I do ALL the time), be sure they are with people that spark your attention.   Meetings are meant to be productive.  However, in most corporate settings, they are completely pointless.  If you are at a job, always ask to skip the meetings and be informed of the details from a co-worker.  This will allow you to free up your time for MORE productive things :)

5.  Third Party Social Media Applications - I’m gonna be just DARN honest with you right now…I don’t give a rat’s tail about MAFIA WARS or Yoville or any of those other applications on Facebook.  Yes they may be fun, but I could care less about achieving level 45 in mafia wars.  Is that REALLY gonna help you become successful in life?  NO, and it never will.  Every single one of those third party applications are designed to get your information.  They will send you information about things that you do not want to buy or opportunities you don’t want to join.  Solution:  Block ALL application invites on the social networks (Myspace, Facebook, etc..)

6.  Instant Messaging – I love instant messaging.  However, if you have the instant messaging on Facebook and have over 100 friends, you would never get anything done.  Why? Because you would have everyone trying to talk to you.  It would be a full time job to keep up with instant messages on Facebook.  Solution: GROUP your friends and decide to allow one group to see you are online (if you like instant messaging)  Me, personally, I only allow TEN people to see I’m online.  Why is that?  It’s because those TEN people have the same mindset as me and understand the importance of time.

Overall, these fatal distractions will never allow you to achieve your dreams.  Keep your eye on the prize and don’t let anyone tell you different.

  1. Great post Ryan! These are great points.

I find myself not responding to my emails but every few days because if I didn’t, it wouldn’t leave much time for anything else.

I LOVE it Ryan! I agree with you on every single one of your Fatal Distractions! ESPECIALLY those darn Facebook applications! Have you read the 4 Hour Work Week by Timothy Ferriss? Great book! All about time-management and improving your results while actually spending less time in the office/at your desk.

Thanks for adding your value again!

2 quick things that I always do to avoid being distracted… some people may or may not agree with this but on skype I always put the setting so it looks like I am not on, but I can still message ppl and my close friends know that I am probably around and just leave a message. I do the same thing with the Facebook chat. I figure if it’s that important, shoot me an email! At least that way I can check it on my own schedule.

    Have an awesome week buddy!

Emails!!!I went through recently an evaluated the mail coming in. You end up with so much, that you can never get to,and the dreaded Facebook games! I’m not afraid to say, that they are like T.V., A waste of time. To each his own I suppose.

  4. Ryan this is an excellent post. We definitely let LIFE get in the way of what we need to do to accomplish our dreams. I think I’m gonna pick up the book 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. A buddy of mine told me that it has really helped to “get his life in order.”

I really like the fresh perpective you did on the issue. Really was not expecting that when I started off studying. Your concepts were easy to understand that I wondered why I never looked at it before. Glad to know that there’s an individual out there that definitely understands what he’s discussing. Great job!
